What is an AI agent wallet?

· By MoltPe Team

An AI agent wallet is an isolated cryptographic wallet owned by a specific AI agent, funded with stablecoin (typically USDC), and controlled by programmable spending policies rather than human signing. It lets the agent send and receive payments autonomously within limits set by the operator. MoltPe provides non-custodial agent wallets with Shamir key splitting, meaning no single party including MoltPe holds a complete private key.

The short version

In more detail

A regular consumer wallet assumes there is a human holding a phone or hardware key to sign each transaction. An agent wallet flips that model: the holder is software, it runs 24/7, and it may execute thousands of transactions a day. That means three things have to change. First, the key management has to be non-custodial but also automated — MoltPe uses Shamir secret sharing, which splits the private key into multiple shares so that no single party (including MoltPe itself) can sign alone. Second, the authorization model shifts from per-transaction approval to policy-based guardrails. Third, the wallet is single-purpose — scoped to one agent, one set of jobs — so if anything goes wrong, the blast radius is contained.

What does the agent actually do with the wallet? It pays for things. That might be pay-per-call API access (using the x402 protocol), merchant checkout at an AI-native store (using MPP), data purchases from another agent, compute time on a GPU provider, or gas-sponsored micro-transfers to tip contributors. Because USDC is a dollar-pegged stablecoin running on low-fee chains like Polygon PoS, Base, and Tempo, the agent can send $0.01 payments economically — something impossible on traditional card networks where minimum fees dwarf the transaction.

The operator — the human or company that owns the agent — retains control through the spending policy and through the ability to pause, fund, or drain the wallet at any time. The agent can spend, but it cannot change its own limits. That asymmetry is what makes agent wallets safe enough to deploy in production.
